Tramadol is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Tramadol extended -release tablets and capsules are used by people who want to relieve  pain around the clock. Tramadol medications are called opiate(narcotic) analgesics. This medication works by changing the way the brain and the nervous system respond to pain. Tramadol is marketed  as Ultram when taken as an immediate release formulation, the onset of pain relief occurs within an hour. It has two different mechanisms, first, it binds to opioid receptors. Second, it inhibits the reuptake of serotonin and nor epinephrine.

In 1995, Tramadol was approved by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA). Tramadol is associated with wide range of side effects in many people, and when such situation arises consult the doctor immediately. Before consuming Tramadol one has to be careful of following signs:

  • Severe breathing problems
  • If one is allergic then blockage of Intestines
  • If one has recently used alcohol, sedatives or any tranquilizers then they should avoid it
  • History of drug addiction
  • Mental problems
  • Elderly people and pregnant women should not consume this medication

Common side effects may include:

  • Itching
  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Impaired mental abilities

Serious may include:

  • Seizures
  • Serotonin syndrome
  • Depressed breathing
  • Life-threatening allergic reactions
  • Swelling of skin
  • Fatal skin reactions
  • Suicidal thoughts
